Piece Learning Courses

Dokokara - taught by Yuta Kato, feedback by Masa Miyano

  • Composed by Yuta Kato. Originally commissioned and performed by Zenshin Daiko

  • "Dokokara" draws its name from taiko syllabary, where “doko” means two strikes in the center of the drum and “kara” is two on the rim. In Japanese, the phrase “doko kara?” also means "where from?".

  • The piece’s arrangement plays on the concept of the rippling effects of energy on its surroundings. Where does energy come from? And where does it go?

Hachijo Solo Development - taught by Masa Miyano

  • For those who have taken a Hachijo course or have experience with Hachijo Daiko

  • Students will be introduced to a series of drills/exercises aimed to increase self-awareness in kata, technique, sound, and emotion. Create and share your story through a Hachijo solo at the recital!

Jack Bazaar - taught by Yuta Kato

  • Composed by Kris Bergstrom, Jack Bazaar features dynamic choreography and challenging slant-drum mutli-tone rhythms.

  • Specifically requested by the National Theater of Japan for performance in the 2013 Nihon no Taiko concert, Jack Bazaar is one of the taiko world's most exciting compositions.

  • In this course we will be covering Karc all the way up until the ending, Cats and Dogs.

  • In this course you will learn the chu-daiko portion of the piece known for it's fluid movement and seamless incorporation of twirls.

Yodan Uchi - taught by Yuta Kato

  • Yodan-Uchi is a style created by the original Sukeroku Taiko members - Motoe Onozato, Seido Kobayashi, Yoshihisa Ishikura, and Yutaka Ishizuka.

  • This dynamic style incorporates taiko on a naname-stand and a hachijo-stand and allows for full body taiko movement and choreography.

  • The 12-week course will focus on learning the fundamentals along with a simplified version of UnitOne's Yodan-Uchi Arrangement.
